How to Lose Weight after a Twin Pregnancy

Weight gain about 25-30 pounds is inevitable and also desirable during the nine months of gestation period for a single baby. A normal weight gain is an indication for a healthy pregnancy. For twins weight gain should be more about 35 to 45 pounds as recommended by medical experts. The general concept is that the babies bear the one third of the total weight gained by the mothers.

After delivering twins it is obvious for the mothers to remain engaged totally with the feeding and sleeping patterns of the twins and nurturing them properly. It is tough to make out ample time to take special care of her figure or to bring it back to original shape, especially within first three months of delivery. It is really a trying time for mothers to adjust with the new born twins and at the same time work hard to reduce weight gained during twin pregnancy.

Things can't change overnight

One has to wait for 8 months perhaps more than a year to bring back the original shape and weight for the body. Single pregnancy itself is strenuous and twin pregnancy adding more to the strains. Reducing weight drastically is not at all a wise thing to do. The mother must regain her energy, recover from the weakness of delivery and then start working out plans to reduce weight. One has to bear with patience, by changing the life style and by setting realistic goals to reduce weight in a healthy manner.

Absolute breast feeding

Breast feeding the babies plays a major role in reducing post partum weight. It reduces the size of the uterus and also helps in calorie burning. Breast feeding needs lots of calories especially for twins, they will require almost double the amount compared to the single pregnancy.

Eating right

Diet plays an important role in reducing the post partum weight in a healthy way. It would be a seriously wrong thing to skip meals in order to reduce weight fast. On the other hand a diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits will provide the desired nutrition for the mother and the twins. Skimmed milk, yoghurt are low in fat and supplies the required calcium requirement. Low intake of carbohydrates, fats and strict avoidance of refined sugar and processed food all aid in the postpartum weight reduction.

Fluid intake

Taking plenty of fluids through water or fruit juices hydrates the body, helps in production of milk and reduces the craving for food which in turn helps in reducing weight. Care should be taken that the fruit juices contain no added sugar.

Exercise

After few months of delivery the mother can make out some time to go for mild physical work outs, stretching and bending exercises. Going out for a stroll with the twins gives the satisfaction and joy of the motherhood adding to the benefits of weight reduction.
